There are a wide range of psychic abilities.

Psychic, in more academic circles anyway
refers to a much larger set of skills & phenomena than
"knowing what is going to happen".

While many of these psychic abilities
can be studied in a lab setting, making them available to the discerning
eye of scientific inquiry, many of the more esoteric psychic skills tend to
defy convention and closer analysis.
( Which of course makes them that much more fun to explore! )

Some of the different types are listed below:

Automatic writing:
To do this you need a pen and paper and no thought
whatsoever - just write. You can stop whenever you want. Read what you
have written and most likely you will be very surprised. This is said to be
the writings of your subconscious mind or even that of an unseen force.
Some even find that their writings are more intelligent and impressive than
if they tried using conscious thought.

Channeling:
This is done when a spirit uses a psychic to communicate. Most
often the psychic's voice will change because it is not their voice box but
that of the spirit.

Clairaudience:
This is also a very interesting ability. It is that of
hearing sounds not audible to other humans. Psychics say they can either
hear people "talking" to them as if they are standing next to them or in
their minds with different voices.

Clairvoyance:
This is the ability to see what is not physically in front of
you - but with your mind's eye. This is how some psychics see spirits.
They are seen either as a physical body or as a picture.

Precognition:
This is knowing about an event before it took place. Many
people have dreams that they later find have come true. This is likely to
happen to most of us - however, when it happens many times than it becomes
more and more impressive.

Psychometry:
This is knowing about a person through touching their personal
belongings. While looking for missing persons, many psychics ask to be
given a personal object of the person first.

Telepathy:
This is quite simply reading the minds of others. This is still
under debate on whether the power even exists. It is more likely psychics
are reading other's emotions rather than their actual thoughts.
